Owen's Second Month

Our little guy is continuing to grow and starting to fill out to no longer look like a fragile baby. At his two month check up he weighed in at 9 pounds exactly and measured 21 & 3/4 inches long. He continues to have fits of colic here and there, but otherwise is doing really well. We have to go back to the pediatrician in a month for a weight check. Dr. Perl did not want to wait 2 months to see Owen back just to play it safe.

Owen is becoming more alert and is taking in his environment. He smiles at everyone and is even starting to laugh. His laugh is pretty much him opening his mouth really wide and usually just one little sound comes out or he does a huge smile and sticks out his tongue as he shy away. Owen will mimic sticking his tongue out when you do it at him. He holds his head up nice and high. Owen continues to not like to be put down very often so tummy time is not going so well. He is still a huge eater and eats every 2 to 3 hours all day long. At night we are having some luck in the cradle, but he typically ends up being held most of the night after he does about 2 to 3 hours in the beginning of the night in his cradle.

We are still trying to establish a day to day routine for the whole family, but it is slowly making some progress. It definitely helps routine with the holidays all over with and we are not running around as much. Typically I run out during the day for at least an hour for Ethan to take a nap and Owen will sleep too. It is my only quiet time during the day it seems and Ethan just refuses to lay down in his room to take a nap which usually results in a melt down if I do not take a drive.

Ethan's personality.

Ethan has been a definite character lately. When he is not have full out melt downs that make you want to pull all your hair out, he is actually very pleasant. He is constantly telling everyone he loves them in a shy cute voice. His response to almost everything is "Aww, so cute!". And he is expressing his personality in full through drawing, play, and vocabulary. Earlier this week he wanted to dress up as a pirate and was going around saying "Argh". He is starting to elaborate on his coloring and trying to stay in the lines in coloring books, beginning to draw faces, and trying to draw stick people too. My favorite was the other day he used his magna-doodle and took the two circle magnets to make eyes, the triangle magnet upside down to make a nose, then he drew a circle around them and squiggles along the bottom of the circle. This was his picture of skull rock. It looked just like it from one of his new favorite shows "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" on the Disney Channel. Of course his absolute favorite show is "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse". He watches it in an interactive manner, talking to the characters, dancing, singing, and just plain excitement over everything they do on the show.

With the weather occasionally being nice and warmer out, we try to take advantage of it and Ethan loves every minute of it. I believe he is done with the whole cabin fever bit and is ready to be outside everyday so hopefully it continues to warm up so we can. The problem I have is some days it is okay for Ethan, but too cold and windy for Owen. Even in the baby bjorn the wind takes Owen's breath away and he gasps for air, but there have been a few days where it has been great out.

Ethan is also loving that Owen is beginning to interact with him. Ethan will come up to Owen and he just smiles ear to ear for Ethan. Ethan of course has to always be on the floor with Owen when I have Owen down for tummy time. He really likes doing things for Owen too like checking in on him, giving him his pacifier or toy and anything else he is able to help with.

Ethan wanted to help Owen go down the slide.

Ethan was making worms from his play dough.

Playing with Owen, well Owen's toys at least.

"Argh"

Ethan being a pirate.

The crib has done wonders.

Owen is consistently improving with his sleep since he has moved into his room at night. Typically he will sleep anywhere from a 4 to 6 hour span depending on the last time he ate before being put to bed. Last night was a different story. Owen actually slept through the night for the first time!!!! I fed him a little after 9pm and around 10pm he was put down to sleep. He was a little difficult going down. I tried a couple times but every time I put him down a few minutes later he would wake up crying. Finally Jarred gave it a try and got Owen sound asleep. Both of us thought it was going to be a long night; that maybe he was not feeling well with how difficult he was being and since I was coming down with a cold myself. I woke up several times throughout the night, but Owen was still fast asleep. It was not until after 7am that Owen began to wake up. It was absolutely wonderful, although I of course was dying for him to eat as soon as possible. Only time will tell if this is the new sleeping pattern for Owen. I am guessing it will still be some time before he is sleeping every night all night long.

Owen's Room

For the past two nights Owen has been sleeping in his room. Surprisingly the transition went very smoothly. We thought it would cause Ethan to wake up hearing Owen, but that has been fine. Owen is actually sleeping better in his crib and thus is allowing mommy to sleep better too. Saturday was his first night in his crib. Jarred got Owen to sleep while I was giving Ethan his bath and he laid him down around 8:30pm. I was very hesitant going to bed because I was afraid Owen would wake up as soon as I got to sleep. Luckily I did go to bed because Owen slept until 4:30 in the morning. He woke up actually pleasant and just making some of a fuss. When I went in to get him he just smiled at me. After feeding him he was awake for awhile though, but before 6am I was able to put him back down in his crib and get a few more hours of sleep until 8am when he woke up next. The second night didn't go as well, but very good none the less. Owen is moving in the right direction and hopefully in the near future we will see him sleeping through the night. :) Wishful thinking, right?!
